Cattle Market Finds Bargain Hunters

Live cattle futures rebounded from midday lows, and ended the Thursday session with gains of as much as 70 cents. Feeder cattle futures continued to climb, and surpassed triple digits, as the front months closed with gains of as much as $1.77. The 02/11 CME Feeder Cattle Index was 31 cents higher to $140.98. The USDA released the weekly Export Sales report this morning, showing that beef bookings for the week ending 02/06 at 17,492 MT. That was 6.61% lower wk/wk but 16.49% higher yr/yr. Beef exports from the report added 16,890 MT to the total which is now 91,810 MT on the year. YTD beef exports are outpacing last year by 46.94%. Wholesale boxed beef prices were mixed again on Thursday afternoon. Choice boxes were up 14 cents to $206.45 cwt, while select boxes were $1.51 lower to $203.79 cwt. Cash trade so far this week has been around $118-119, with bids on Thursday near $119, dressed sales were reported mostly at $190, with limited higher grade $192. The USDA estimated FI cattle slaughter for the week through Thursday at 482,000 head, which is 4,000 head below last week and 15,000 more yr/yr.
